Consistently finding and retaining great people isn’t easy. Doing it in a rapidly changing world only adds to the complexity. The discussion will focus on two primary areas. We’ll first examine how to effectively assess talent – rethinking traditional approaches, managing bias and the importance of identifying traits. We’ll then discuss the importance of communication – how to close gaps, intergenerational conflict and leading beyond the “open door policy.” As a talent practitioner himself, Chaka will focus on specific practices that people can take with them and immediately apply.
Chaka Booker is the author of Mastering the Hire: 12 Strategies to Improve Your Odds of Finding the Best Hire. He is also a managing director for The Broad Center, a national leadership development organization founded by billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad. For the past fifteen years, he has recruited and developed talent across the country – and he learns more from them than they learn from him. He is a Forbes monthly contributor, a Pahara-Aspen Fellow at the Aspen Institute and earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and psychology from UCLA and an M.B.A. from Stanford. As an introvert, he is either helping leaders navigate their toughest challenges or he’s figuring out how to leave a room without anyone noticing.
When feeling like a fake hurts you: The effects of the impostor syndrome on career advancement

This session provides participants with an understanding of the impostor syndrome, which refers to feelings of inadequacy, incompetence, unintelligence, and an unfounded fear that others will discover that we do not belong in the positions that we occupy. Drawing on extant research, Dr. Gutiérrez will define the impostor syndrome, describe its symptoms, examine its origins, and provide strategies to counter its deleterious effects. This presentation seeks to draw attention to the impostor syndrome as an internal barrier that may have important implications for workplace outcomes.
Angélica S. Gutiérrez, Ph.D. earned her B.A. in Political Science and Sociology with honors at UCLA, M.P.P at the University of Michigan, and Ph.D. at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Recognized as one of the “World’s Best 40 Under 40 Business Professors” by Poets & Quants, Dr. Gutiérrez teaches Leadership, Negotiations, and Diversity Management at the undergraduate, MBA, and Executive MBA levels at Loyola Marymount University. She has presented her research on diversity, and the impostor syndrome to various organizations, including the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Hasbro, and tech firms in Silicon Valley and Silicon Beach.
